Summary: At ECHO’s North America Regional Impact Center (NARIC), manage the Seed Bank as part of the educational and training resources that support ECHO’s global mission and vision for communicating Christ with training partners, farmers, governments, church leaders and other non-profit organizations. The manager will practice seed-saving, seed production, and storage. This position directly connects to our network the vision and mission of ECHO. The Seed Bank Manager will conduct research and seed trials of new germplasm for the ECHO network. T he Seed Bank Manager has the role of developing and improving ECHO’s seed technology capacity and knowledge base. The Seed Bank Manager also provides vital support to the Global Farm, Propagation, and Retail through seed sourcing, seed production, and storage. This role will oversee the daily operations of the Seed Bank, in all iterations on the farm, to fulfill the goals and vision for ECHO’s global seed ministry. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Maintain adequate inventory of approved seeds for distribution to the ECHO network and for ECHO organizational needs through purchasing and seed production. Administrate seed bank database software, refining and improving protocols for its use. Actively research new seeds and seed sources with relevance to ECHO's network and adding to our inventory. Facilitate the seed request process and lead order fulfillment as well as respond to seed-related inquiries, network requests, ECHOcommunity conversations, and drop in visitors. Participate in training and workshops on seed banking for the ECHO’s network Collaborate with global Regional Impact Center seed banks to maintain and improve the database seed record keeping systems Collaborate with the Global Farm Manager to develop a list of annual planting options (varieties) and assignments for the Global Farm. Provide interns, apprentices, trainees, volunteers and others on farm with guidance and advisement about seed crops and seed availability within Areas of Responsibility. Mentor assigned staff as part of professional development programs and plans in annual seed management in Areas of Responsibility. Collaborate with other managers and the Seed Bank Assistant to manage onsite seed production. Oversee planning, planting, crop management, and harvest in the seed grow out areas. Provide instructional and seasonal opportunities for volunteers and trainees to practice hand pollination, seed processing and storage, and various germination testing techniques. Provide instruction and regular guidance to trainees on record keeping, scientific nomenclature, and seed crop management. Advise and educate interns, trainees, volunteers, stakeholders and area advisors on growing crops (e.g., seed selection, seed processing and storage) for strategic seed production. Provide seed technology teaching and practical hands-on learning opportunities for the Training and Extension Department, global Regional Impact Centers, and ECHO Global events. Collaborate with the research department to conduct variety trials. Monitor and manage seed bank cold room temperature and humidity. Provide adequate seed collection backup and monitor master packet backup storage conditions for ECHO FL and RIC seed banks. Maintain proper standards of seed cleaning and processing using appropriate methods. Monitor seed quality such as moisture content, vigor, and viability. Submit monthly reports of seed inventory indicators to the SFRC team leader as well as financial reports. Annually prepare a global seed catalog for the network. Participate in the weekly Agricultural Resourcing Meetings. Participate in the SFRC management team. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to propose, implement and follow through on matters of policy and program while handling repetitive or sporadic detail in an effective and timely fashion. Organizational Relationships: Those directly supervised: Seed Bank Assistant Those indirectly supervised: Agriculture Training and regular Volunteers, Interns, Work Teams, Apprentices Other departments to work closely with: Training and Extension, Facilities and Infrastructure Education and/or Experience: A B.S. or higher degree in agricultural or biological science background/degree, international agriculture development experience, administrative ability, good project management skills, excellent team/people management skills and teaching skills. Database, information management, and inventory management experience is highly desirable. Fine motor skills such as typing, the use of a computer mouse and telephone handset are required. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to sit, stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Employee is expected to work in the seed cold storage room for prolonged periods of time, especially during annual inventory audit. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work involves a combination of indoor and outdoor working conditions, primarily outdoors. Weather conditions may be challenging (heat, rain, and wind). The noise level in the work environment can be high at times. Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
