Middle School English Teacher POSITION SUMMARY The Middle School English Teacher has full responsibility for teaching English and Language Arts to 5th-grade students. This is a full-time position for the 2023-2024 school year. ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Teach English to Middle School students as assigned and help design, refine, and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum. • Maintain the classroom environment to support the curriculum. • Write daily/weekly lesson plans that align with the curricular learning objectives. • Collaborate with Middle School grade-level teams and the English department to provide a well-linked and integrated learning experience. • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the MS and across divisions. • Serve as an active member of the cross-divisional (Middle and Upper School) English Departments. • Plan a vertical English curriculum with other humanities colleagues. • Complete required Human Resources training each year (CPR, AED, first aid, mandatory reporting, handling of hazardous materials, etc.) • Assess and document student work. • Write individualized conference notes and student reports for each student at required periods during the year, and serve as a 5th-grade advisor. • Instruct and assess students in a positive environment. • Be willing to help plan and chaperone overnight class trips - at least once per year. • Maintain frequent contact with parents via email, phone calls, and face-to-face interactions. • Supervise lunch and recess as required. • Attend and support school events related to admissions, athletics, and related arts (e.g. concerts, theater, and class programs). • Support the School's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and multicultural education. • Stay informed of the latest technical developments in language arts teaching. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Supervise students in the classroom and hallways, during recess/lunch duties, and on classroom field trips. INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS • Must have strong interpersonal communication skills needed with students, parents, and colleagues. • Daily contact with administrators, colleagues, and other staff. • Contact with the Board of Trustees is intermittent. SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS • Thorough knowledge of English pedagogy and the constructivist approach to learning. • Enjoy working with and have a thorough understanding of the specific developmental needs of early adolescents. • Ability to use a variety of assessment techniques, strong instructional and classroom management skills. • Energy, empathy, flexibility, and collaboration. • Good organizational and communication skills. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred. • Minimum of three years' experience in middle school education. WORKING CONDITIONS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk about the campus, and must occasionally lift and move up to 15 pounds. Primarily indoor classroom teaching with occasional field trips. Some evening and weekend commitments. The Middle School program is housed in the Nord Intermediate/Middle School facilities used by grades 5-8. It is a large and airy space providing an attractive environment for learning and collaboration.
