The Lead Educational Interpreter is a salaried position to follow the administrative calendar, reporting to the Director of Education. Under the direction of the Director of Education, the Lead Educational Interpreter supervises and monitors the educational interpreters and provides support for D/HH students based on their ITEP goals and/or diploma requirements in collaboration with the classroom teachers, and other clinical team members. In addition, the Lead Educational Interpreter will have a strong partnership with classroom faculty and clinical staff to support an individualized, evidence-based educational program considering each student's interests, strengths and needs. The Lead Educational Interpreter will provide communication access to D/HH students through the use of English, ASL, PSE, and Signed Exact English (SEE). Responsibilities: Facilitate communication through use of sign language (ASL), PSE, Signed Exact English(SEE), spoken English, cultural mediation, and knowledge of visual accessibility at the school. Monitor and supervise all educational interpreters and create schedule of interpreter coverage for D/HH student needs. Annually evaluate all educational interpreter staff Participate in hiring and selection of educational interpreters. Accepts responsibility for developing and maintaining a relevant professional development plan and seeking a qualified mentor as necessary. Develop and set-up training opportunities, workshops, and professional development for educational interpreters regarding educational settings, IEP involvement, new/specialized vocabulary, AAC use, deafblind and deaf disabled specialties, and music interpretation. Assists administration with observation and evaluation of educational interpreters. Ensures educational interpreters adhere to professional standards and best practices. Prepare and present professional development presentations to staff in education, campus life, and development coaches regarding deaf culture, best practices for deaf students, deaf and deafblind accommodations/accessibility, functional ASL, working with an educational interpreter, and crisis management with deaf ASL users Participate in relevant ongoing research projects with Director of Research Provide/schedule interpreter services during school vacations as needed when D/HH student(s) are present Advocate for additional services/accommodations for D/HH students as needed Provide interpreting services within academic settings, parent meetings, ITEP meetings, and institutional events for and between deaf, deafblind, deaf disabled, hard of hearing, and hearing students, staff, and parents Prepare for interpreting by utilizing provided preparation time and materials including researching outside sources and communicating/collaborating with colleagues. Supports students in collaboration with Special Education Teacher Communicates and documents student progress with educational team; participates in relevant transdisciplinary meetings regarding student progress. Ongoing afterschool collaborations regarding accessibility, accommodations, and curriculum with consult teacher of the deaf, clinical staff, transitions team, and electives teachers Sets up and adapts materials, equipment, and assistive devices for use by student(s) as directed including school emergency protocols. Participate in ITEP meetings and district CSE meetings as a member of the educational team. Prioritizes work assignments appropriately; interpreting educational classroom content should be prioritized above all other interpreting situations/needs. Maintains confidentiality of student information; information is shared only on a relevant need-to-know basis with educational team· Serve as a sign language model for deaf, deafblind, DeafDisabled, and hard of hearing students with who they work; present content and intent of speaker at a language level most readily understood by the individual. May participate in/interpret for crisis intervention and behavioral techniques as needed. Use RID Code of Professional Conduct and EIPA Guidelines for Professional Conduct to guide professional and ethical decision-making. Provide tutoring services to deaf, deafblind, deaf disabled, and hard of hearing students such as preliminary exposure to content-specific vocabulary, reviewing essential concepts, and/or providing additional opportunities for guided practice. Support social development by informally teaching conversational sign to teachers, staff, and peers. Support the general safety, productiveness, and operations of the school within the boundaries of compensated working hours as long as said expectations do not interfere with the need for educational interpreting services. Qualifications: Successful completion of the written portion of the RID (National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) certification exam OR successful completion of the EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) with a score of 3.5 or higher Minimum of 3 or more years interpreting experience with deaf and hard of hearing population, preferably in a K-12 educational setting and/or experience with DeafDisabled students Requirements: Bachelor's Degree Preferred: Certificate of completion or equivalent from an accredited interpreter training program (ITP) is strongly preferred, though relevant experience with deaf, deafblind, Deaf Disabled, and hard of hearing students may be considered. Preferably completed a supervised internship or practicum in an educational setting. Familiarity with common video conferencing platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams Knowledge of deaf, deafblind, Deaf Disabled, hard of hearing services, assistive listening devices, and accommodations in educational settings. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM | This is a 12-month position, with full and part time available. Full-time staff work a traditional 40-hour work week, with expected participation in extra-curricular school activities. Starting Salary: $80,000/annually Supervisory Responsibility –Supervisor of others No Budget responsibility (If yes, please state amount) The Classroom Teacher is responsible for recommending individualized materials necessary for participation in the class. Physical Demands Sitting at a desk, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors), around a hilly campus as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice.
