SUMMARY: The Farm Manager will oversee the daily operations of ECHO’s Global Farm at the North America Regional Impact Center (NARIC) as part of the Small Farm Resource Center (SFRC). The Farm Manager will steward the Global Farm as a living classroom that serves ECHO’s network and professional development programs, connecting the public to the vision and mission of ECHO globally. The Farm Manager will work to increase the breadth and depth of ECHO’s outreach and service to network stakeholders worldwide by leveraging the farm for training and education. Working closely with the Training and Extension Team, the Farm Manager will take the lead as the primary trainer for various topics and serve as a direct manager for professional development interns ensuring that the SFRC is accomplishing the learning objectives in agriculture, community development and other disciplines in preparation for agricultural development work. The Farm Manager will also serve as the direct manager for the Tree Specialist, Animal Specialist, and an Agricultural Assistant. The Farm Manager will shepherd the Global Farm staff and interns in a Christ-like manner, stewarding a community of Christ followers who seek to live in unity with one another while serving God through their daily work. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Global Farm: Implement the vision and oversee the direction for the Global Farm as the primary demonstration ground for training and workshop for various stakeholders which includes interns, apprentices, missionaries, staff from partner organizations, students, volunteers, advisors, and work teams. Oversee the maintenance and daily management of the Global Farm areas as a living classroom Maintain the overall condition and presentation of the Global Farm: Maintain Global Farm aesthetic and safety standards in consultation with the SFRC Team Leader and Safety committee. Approve major changes and modifications to Global Farm infrastructure, roads and drainage. Work with SFRC leader on weather safety precautions for workers on the Global Farm. Coordinate with SFRC leader on freeze protection system readiness, training, and implementation. Maintain licensure as a private pesticide applicator and train-the-trainer certification. Steward ECHO's fruit and vegetable harvest and oversee implementation of a first fruits tithe to a local food bank. Maintain accurate records of farm produce. Facilitate the ongoing development and implementation of planning for the Intern Areas of Responsibility. Explore possibilities of income generation activity on the farm in produce and services. Serve as the main coordinator of tasks and activities for Farm Work. Professional Development Programs: Provide leadership and expertise in ongoing development and management of a high-impact intern training and learning environment. Engage appropriately with the internship and apprentice application and selection process (e.g., promotion, recruitment, reviewing applications, etc.) Serve as the primary and direct supervisor of interns and extended trainees/volunteers. Intentionally connect with key activities while also scheduling times for periodic individual planning and review to reach identified goals. Collaborate with the Training and Extension Team to create and conduct experiential education activities in agricultural training, missions, and local outreach. Collaborate with the Training and Extension Team to oversee (in collaboration and with full support of other departments) the training and hands-on learning experience of the interns (e.g., Buildings and Grounds, Retail, Advancement, Global Services, Volunteers, etc.). Provide needed support and guidance to ensure that training activities incorporate proven adult learning methodologies. Collaborate with the Training and Extension Team regarding ways to ensure that the internship (and broader Training Services) continues to be relevant for ECHO’s audience and advance ECHO’s mission. Be available to meet with visitors passing through ECHO who may have a special interest in on-farm professional development and learning. Other Duties: Provide in-depth, practical training for all stakeholders, including young professionals, network members, and students through orientations, courses, workshops, and seminars in coordination with the SFRC and Training and Extension Team Leaders. Meet and consult with network members, students, and visitors when needed regarding specific agricultural topics, ECHO practices, and the internship. Contribute to the annual budget planning and reporting process. Participate in all relevant ECHO committees and meetings as may be requested and feasible. Cooperate with the Extension Team Leader and Small Farm Resource Center Team Leader by performing additional duties when asked to do so. Stay informed about activities at ECHO Global Regional Impact Center campuses and be prepared to communicate as needed about our mission and work QUALIFICATIONS: Must adhere to the ECHO Statement of Faith and possess character traits consistent with ECHO’s Core Values. Must have training in horticulture and sufficient farm-related experience to make prudent decisions in areas such as planting times, pest management, soil fertility and irrigation techniques. Must have extensive knowledge and experience in agricultural training and possess the ability to teach, use the farm as a teaching platform, and manage/motivate interns, advisors, volunteers, and work team members. Must view the internship and farm as a ministry. Extensive knowledge and “functionality” with relevant software programs. Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and effectively. Strong leadership and organizational skills. Ability to collaborate with various ECHO departments to meet shared goals as well as the ability to work independently when needed. Commitment to understand and implement ECHO policy and procedures. Ability to handle repetitive as well as sporadic detail in an effective and timely fashion. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Degree(s) in agricultural sciences, Community Development or related life experience. International experience preferably with time served in a developing country(s) and on the ECHO farm as a student or intern to provide the perspective needed to manage a farm relevant to smallholder farmers in the tropics. Must have an ability to write and verbally communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, and understand information presented in writing. Must have skills in operating word processing and database systems. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office work environment with frequent outdoor activity. There are times when work is conducted in an office setting. Ability to work in hot and humid Florida summer conditions. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly walk, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel. May be required to climb ladders. The employee will also be required to operate farm machinery and apply agro-chemicals. Must be able to lift, pull, and push moderate to heavy amount of weight, occasionally 50 to 80 pounds, following appropriate safety procedures. Must be able to handle, finger, grasp and feel objects and equipment and reach with hands and arms. POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK: Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. TRAVEL: Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasionally there might be opportunities to visit international and/or domestic sites to build capacity and further develop farm management skills to maintain network-relevant Global Farm demonstrations.
