A Brief Overview The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for the refinement, expansion and maintenance of the DVR training program.1. To provide training for animal care staff, veterinary technical staff, and research staff in animal handling and use (i.e. rodent handling, injection techniques, blood collection, gavage, etc.) and rodent survival surgery.2. Responsible for updating and maintaining the documentation associated with training/retraining/auditing.3. Works closely with the DVR veterinary staff, husbandry staff, and the IACUC office to ensure appropriate levels of training are provided to animal users.4. Individual will be expected to work in multiple facilities with various species (rats, mice, rabbits, sheep, pigs, dogs, non-human primates and zebrafish).5. With minimal oversight, the successful candidate will coordinate, schedule and oversee all DVR related training activities.6. The candidate will also be responsible for analyzing and selecting various online training modules and coordinating the implementation and roll out of these newly available electronic resources.7. The candidate must possess excellent relationship building skills and must be able to work closely with all DVR managers and other CHOP departments to identify and prioritize topics within the training program. What you will do 1. Training and Regulatory Document/Module Development a. Prepare online training materials, lessons, and hands-on classes for DVR veterinary staff, DVR husbandry staff, CHOP investigators and lab staff. b. Assist in the SOP review process, including creating and revising SOPs, and ensuring all SOPs are trained on effectively. c. Develop, implement, and periodically update a multi-facility training program d. Prepare, review, and maintain required training forms, employee training folders, and the CHOP training database. e. Create, implement and maintain a comprehensive training and education curriculum for husbandry technicians of all levels 2. Training a. Perform and develop New Hire husbandry technician training, veterinary staff training, mentor training, PI managed training plans and improvements. b. SOP training: Ensure each employee is trained/proficient on current SOPs required for their position by performing employee assessments to verify proficiency c. Provide training sessions to DVR staff working in all areas of the vivarium, which may include and is not limited to cage wash and biohazard areas d. Conduct components of new hire and promotion onboarding for both DVR and research staff e. Conduct facility orientation for DVR staff as well as new researchers f. Facilitate AALAS certification review sessions to include regularly scheduled classes, preparation of lectures and assessments. g. Develop and maintain a subject matter expert training program consisting of DVR staff that will assist with the large load of training that must be performed. 3. General Administrative a. Review training prerequisites prior to scheduling trainees for lecture and/or hands on training. b. Reserve room accommodations for regular training sessions. c. Maintain the CHOP database as it applies to CHOP training. 4. Develop a facility wide shadowing program to provide an increase in job knowledge and to increase channels of communication. Performs other duties as assigned Education Qualifications Bachelor's Degree Required Master's Degree Laboratory Animal Science Preferred Experience Qualifications At least two (2) years experience working in the laboratory animal field, including direct training experience Required At least three (3) years as a training specialist in a laboratory animal program Preferred performing necropsies Preferred Skills and Abilities Working knowledge of all activities of an animal facility preferred Excellent written and oral communication skills Strong teaching skills Computer proficiency working with software such as MS Office products, Adobe Acrobat, and web browsers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills Must be able to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced and ever changing environment. Must be proficient in clearly conveying information and ideas to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message.
