Changing Lives.The Adult Surgery Specialty Unit (2RC) is a 34-bed surgical unit that provides post-operative care to a variety of patients undergoing complex procedures. The Surgical Specialty Unit believes it is our responsibility to provide patient centered care that will enable surgical patients and their families to cope with the physiological and psychological aspects of their illness or injury. We believe that exceptional care of the surgical patient embodies excellent clinical skills intertwined with compassionate care to achieve maximum quality of life. This leader will join our dedicated team of nurse leaders and staff within the Medical Surgical Services Nursing Division (MSS) at our University CampusKey Areas of Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:* Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff in an inpatient setting. Responsible for talent management of staff and identify succession plan strategies. Follow and apply leave management policies. Knowledgeable of and implement human resources policies/procedures and provisions in the collective bargaining agreements* Prepare budget or assist in development; provide projections and recommendations. Monitor and maintain unit operating budget within specified targets. Analyze variances and create action plans to take corrective action. Understand financial implications of collective bargaining agreements* Provide leadership to establish and/or maintain efficient and effective systems to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Identify trends and determine quality initiatives and priorities* Allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectations. Review patient satisfaction data and develop, implement, and evaluate plan(s) to enhance patient satisfaction. Ensure unit is survey ready* Develop action plans for the unit that meet health care strategic goals focusing on patient safety/quality, experience, throughput/length of stay, and staff engagement. * Monitor/evaluate goal implementation and provide progress reports to nursing leadership* Advocate for needs of unit with healthcare leaders. Facilitate multidisciplinary participation in clinical problem solving. Utilize a unit council to identify opportunities for improvement and innovative models of care using a multidisciplinary team to impact patient outcomes* Educate and mentor staff in the management of complex patient care issues. Provide clinical education and coaching to develop staff competency and professionalism. Participate in and support education of health care students* Encourage staff to participate in evidence-based practice research initiatives and incorporate best practices into unit operations* Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, nationalities, genders, ages, etc* Ability to utilize existing resources and learning to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals/needs. Preferred Master's degree (in nursing, MBA or healthcare related) or Doctorate (DNP, PhD). If candidate does not have a master's degree, they will be strongly encouraged to obtain one within 5 years of starting position* Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license upon hire* Considerable (3+ years) of nursing leadership experience * Excellent written and verbal communication skills* Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so* Must be proficient in computer software applications* Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body.
