Machine Learning Scientist

Location:
Baltimore, MD
Description:

Overview Springtail AI is developing ML agents that build models of the world through active learning - experimentation and observation – a marked difference from LLMs, which (mostly) learn passively. Agents use these models to reason about the world, which allows them to bootstrap their understanding and solve otherwise difficult problems. Our agents are focused on building interpretable, falsifiable models for science from limited data. To do this we’re developing novel machine learning architectures. Your job as part of the team is to contribute to the architectures - and make them performant . Models include successors to the Transformer architecture, hybrid optimization / DP / graph / search algorithms, and other innovative approaches. Work will include more theoretical aspects (e.g. symmetry extraction) and practical implementation (CUDA kernels), as well as collaboration with external teams in the biological sciences. Springtail AI is a fiscally-sponsored project of Digital Harbor Foundation. Through a portfolio of projects focused on developing leadership within communities, Digital Harbor Foundation supports those closest to challenges to take deliberate actions based on a design thinking approach, backed by data analysis, grounded in a practice of collective impact, and driven by a commitment to racial equity. Experience + Education Requirements PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Physics, or a related field. Experience with deep learning required; experience with compiler design, program synthesis, or SAT/SMT solvers strong plus. Familiarity with CUDA and/or parallel hardware algorithm design. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C++, Rust, or Ocaml. Proficiency in machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, JAX). Solid understanding of mathematical modeling and complexity analysis, linear algebra, and general algorithm design. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Additional Notes This position is fully remote, though there is a preference for people in the Bay Area. Roles & Responsibilities Research and Development Rapidly iterate to improve the performance of bespoke models, with an eye for theoretical and practical scaling. Propose and test alternate problem formulations and algorithmic structures for the active learning agents. Benchmark and rigorously verify results; identify shortfallings of existing tests. Reason pragmatically about limitations and constraints of current and proposed approaches. Publication and Documentation Document and organize code, algorithms, and methodologies so others may learn from it and build upon it. Prepare research papers and documentation for publication in conferences and journals, as well as short-form blog posts Collaboration Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, data scientists, and domain experts. Provide technical guidance and support to other team members. Continuous Learning Engage in continuous learning and skill development to stay current with the rapidly evolving field of machine learning.
