Position Objective Candidate will perform a variety of technical work associated with the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and associated wastewater system. The candidate must possess sound knowledge and understanding of water and wastewater utility operation including process control, maintenance, and regulatory procedures. Must be able to work in and around water and wastewater treatment equipment, chemicals, and process components; read and interpret plans, engineering documents, and Safety Data Sheets; and follow work procedures in manufacturer's Operation and Maintenance Manuals. Duties and Responsibilities Plant Operations Operates wastewater treatment plant in accordance with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection rules and regulations, Florida Administrative Code, the operating permit, and company protocol. Operates plant equipment such as aerators, filters, pumps, lift stations, aeration basins, instrumentation, motors, clarifiers, chemical feed systems, blowers, generators, lighting, chlorinators, rake drives, bar screens, flow splitter boxes, meters, air compressors, air distribution systems, timers, controls, sludge dewatering equipment, valves, contact chambers, hydropneumatic tanks, surge tanks, and other similarly related plant components and equipment. Adjusts and maintains plant equipment and chemical dosages to achieve the best possible treatment results and to maintain compliance with the plant's effluent requirements. Controls waste activated sludge rates to maintain required solids inventory to achieve the best possible treatment, digester loading, and stabilization of residuals. Operates effluent disposal systems in accordance with plant operating permit and operating protocol. This includes: public access reuse systems, storage ponds, and the rotation of rapid rate infiltration basins/ spray fields. Performs compliance sampling for required parameters for water and wastewater quality analysis, in accordance with facility operating permit. Maintains complete and accurate operating logbook and records for wastewater plant operations in accordance with FDEP requirements. Performs field testing to include: dissolved oxygen concentration, chlorine residual, pH, settable solids, microscopic examination of activated sludge, nitrate, hardness, total dissolved solids, conductivity, alkalinity, ammonia, iron, chlorides, turbidity, and any other such field testing necessary for plant process control to maintain compliance with the plant operating permit, company or plant operating protocol, and FDEP rules and regulations. Performs calibration procedures on all field testing equipment per FDEP requirements and maintains calibration log for each field instrument. Maintains all field testing equipment in good working order. Assists with repairs to plant equipment including: chemical feed pumps and injection points, lubrication of pumps, motors, blowers, rake drive assemblies, mixers, aerators, etc. Replace air filters on plant equipment, perform routine instrumentation cleaning and maintenance and report any required maintenance necessary to maintain efficient equipment operations and compliance with plant operating permit. Perform general housekeeping duties such as, but not limited to, picking up and disposal of various debris and screenings, empty trash cans, washing down of clarifier weirs and other plant equipment, sediment removal and tank cleaning, clean up minor sludge spills and sludge splashing, netting floatable debris from tanks and keep walkways clear of obstruction and debris. Cleaning, painting, landscape duties such as mowing, weeding and general labor is included in work to be performed. Report any unsafe working conditions to supervisor immediately upon discovery and performs other similar duties as assigned or requested. M ust be available from time to time to work scheduled or unscheduled overtime in order to satisfy plant-staffing requirements. Performs work to support the utility's preventative maintenance program and repair activities for the utility's wastewater collection system. Assists in inspecting and cleaning pump stations for proper operation. Cleans wet wells and operates pumps in wastewater pump stations. Assists other maintenance staff in repair and maintenance of pumps, valves, controls, generators and related equipment in pump stations. Professionalism Regular and timely attendance is a requirement of this position. Must be able to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and to communicate information professionally. Must speak and write English clearly. Must be able to maintain cooperative working relationships with employees, various organizations, and the public. Must have commitment to the organization, willingness to take initiative, dependability, maturity in relationships with others, and self confidence. Must be able to produce quality, accurate work. Must be able to detect and correct errors. Must be able to utilize work time properly and productively. Physical Requirements Must be able to use a shovel, common hand and power tools, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, calculator, and common lab equipment. Work in a variety of weather conditions including heat and rain. Good physical condition without physical limitation. Experience Class C or above Wastewater Operator License with a minimum of 2 years of prior experience in wastewater and water utility operations. Florida Driver's License with CDL Endorsement (or ability to obtain). Compensation Pay and Fringe Benefit is calculated on an hourly basis in accordance with the Service Contract Act Wage Determination for Hillsborough County. Uniforms and laundry service provided.
