Job Title: Shelter Entitlement and Employment Specialist Status: Full-time (hours may vary) FLSA Classification: Non - Exempt Job Location: Far Rockaway, Queens NY Objective: The Entitlements Specialist will promote vocational training and employment as a critical component of finding and maintaining housing stability. Working as a member of the interdisciplinary team the EES will facilitating programing to educate residents about available benefits and also provide education and vocational programming to support obtaining permanent employment. Essential Functions: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Coordinates, monitors and evaluates benefit services available to shelter residents. Assesses and identifies resident needs and ensures they apply for and maintain applicable benefits. Complete entitlements assessment to determine all available benefits for shelter residents Assist residents in obtaining all required Identification including Social security cards and/or birth certificate Escort individuals to various government and city agencies such as Social Security Administration, HRA-Public Assistance, Medicaid and food stamp offices. Processes appeals, advocate and pursues legal channels to obtain funding for residents who have been denied entitlements Develops and conducts training modules with residents and staff on regulation and laws pertaining to federal and New York City benefits Assist clients in engaging in formal education or vocational training opportunities such as TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) classes, college education and technical training schools. Teach job searching skills such as resume preparation, interviewing skills and completing online applications both individually and as a group. Provide job development and placement supports including job search assistance, benefits counseling and advocacy. Educate clients about job retention, accommodations, disclosure issues to employers and how their benefits will be affected by earned income. Participate in meetings with case managers to coordinate services and generate ideas to help clients maintain their benefits and achieve their education and employment goals. Document all client work in confidential electronic records. Complete reports as directed by supervisor. Required Education and Experience: Associates Degree/ college courses required, Bachelor's Degree in a related field preferred. One experience providing entitlement and employment services or workforce development. Experience working with clients impacted by homelessness, mental illness, or substance use is required. Must have initiative, the ability to work well under pressure, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team Bilingual (Spanish) preferred. Work Environment: This job operates in a homeless shelter and works with a population who may experience mental illness, substance use, disability, HIV/AIDS, and other chronic illnesses. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, climb stairs and/ or kneel.
