Job Purpose The R&D Managers role is responsible for leading a team to meet deadlines and objectives put forth by the executive team here at Wana. Job responsibilities include Managing a team to meet project deadlines, developing and testing new product formulas, vetting new ingredients to reduce cogs and improve supply chain, working with production teams to resolve issues and improve efficiencies, among other responsibilities. This position will be required to coordinate with the QA team to generate key deliverables for new products including MMR, SOP, Recipe, and new ingredient specification sheets when applicable. This person should have a good understanding of GMP and how it relates to Wana CO and satellite markets. Must be a current resident of CO and have the ability to obtain an MED Badge. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: Manage specific projects to meet stated goals and specifications. Providing technical and confectionery expertise to the company. Cooking or producing test batches of existing and new product recipes or formulations. Conducting potency, flavor, and sensory testing on products. Data collection and assessment from evaluations and tests. Maintain data and records in an organized manner - maintaining the team one drive. Providing weekly updates to the R&D team on project updates, successes, and challenges. Managing a team to achieve department-wide goals and objectives. Staying up to date on emerging food trends and new ingredients. Staying current with emerging trends in cannabis science. Researching equipment and ingredient suppliers. Create and maintain a library of retain samples. Generate supporting documents for all new products, processes, and equipment. Training market expansion trainers and coordinators on new processes and equipment. Job Requirements: Experience in culinary nutrition, food science & technology or equivalent. Competency in a kitchen environment and skills to work independently on confectionary recipes. Ability to manage individual projects for the duration from start to completion. Organization and management skills to track progress and ability to regularly report results to the team. Ability to identify and implement creative solutions. Ability to taste and describe sensory characteristics of products. Create and distribute product evaluations to generate feedback and organize and present results to the team. Ability to interpret data and use resources to troubleshoot and resolve issues. Ability to use quality assurance tools and analytical equipment. Qualifications in or understanding of GMP’s, Food safety, ServSafe®, and HACCP. Computer skills with Microsoft Products – Excel, Word, Outlook. Excellent organization and communication skills, verbal and written. High level of integrity and work ethic. Supervisory Responsibility This position has direct report(s) and supervisory responsibility in the R&D department. This employee has the authority to hire and fire other employees, or this employee’s suggestions and recommendations as to the hiring, firing, advancement, promotion, or any other change of status of other employees are given particular weight. ServSafe certified or ability to be certified. HACCP Certified or ability to be certified. Confectionary Culinary Experience. Preferred Qualifications Flavorist or Flavor Chemist experience. MS in confectionery science or related field. Work Authorization/Security Clearance This position requires a valid state-issued license to work in the cannabis industry (e.g., MED Badge). Compensation and Benefits Annual compensation commensurate with experience from $85,000 - $90,000, plus potential bonuses. Health, vision, dental insurance offered to all full-time employees. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This position is exempt from overtime pay due to administrative employee exemption. This position regularly works normal business hours, Monday – Thursday, 40 hours per week. Please confirm with the supervisor regarding the expected working schedule. Weekends and nights may be required. Typical hours of operation are 7:30am – 6:00pm Monday through Thursday. Travel is not expected. Work Environment Typically, this job operates in a professional kitchen environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively. The employee frequently is required to set up heavy equipment, move boxes, and other materials weighing up to 50 lbs. as needed. This position routinely uses standard kitchen equipment such as pots, spatulas, measuring spoons, hot plates, etc. This position will require the use of some laboratory equipment such as refractometers, p.H. meters, and incubators. This role will require you to use standard office equipment such as computers, printers & phones. This role will also require the use of Microsoft office programs such as Word and Excel.
