POSITION SUMMARY This is a full-time position located in Fairview Heights, IL.Responsible for implementation of the substance abuse prevention initiative serving Clinton and Washington Counties, including assessing community needs, aiding in ongoing efforts in the maintenance of a youth advisory council and communication campaigns, and implementing a comprehensive substance abuse prevention program targeting youth between the ages of 11 and 18. Participating in community events and coalition meetings pertaining to preventing the underage use of alcohol as well as other substances. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provides education and activities for youth and parents, consistent with CARE principles. Works collaboratively with other prevention specialists to reduce substance use among youth in select communities. Coordinates curriculum implementation scheduling; Delivers the selected curricula as described by the program model; identifies service delivery issues and makes recommendations about strategies to resolve delivery problems. Engages in assessment activities to identify the areas of most need in the target area, the current resources devoted to substance abuse prevention, and other relevant data and information about the types, frequency, and severity of the use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco among youth aged 11 - 17 years. Participates on an existing community group or recruits' organizations and individuals to serve on an advisory council for service area. Group's purpose is to advise on community initiatives to address substance use among youth and substance related issues. Maintains communication with front-line staff in each program site in order to learn of concerns or issues that have arisen. Keeps the site coordinator informed of these issues and makes recommendations about resolution. Maintains written records of each pre/post-session assessment and program session as directed by the Prevention Supervisor. Meets goals as stated in the grant/program plan. Attends all training and workshops as required by the Department of Human Services. Participates and supports additional community events as an organization representative. Assists in developing communication campaigns to address substance use and abuse. Delivers positive youth development activities as needed in accordance with the program delivery plan and consistent with CARE Principles. Must become certified in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and capable of performing crisis prevention and de-escalation techniques with fidelity to the TCI model. Required to conduct TCI methods as required Will actively seek to prevent behavioral crises, de-escalate crises as they occur and generally respond to crises in accordance with TCI guidelines. Input required data into the Prevention HUB and complete required documentation as identified by the Department of Human Services Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS The Prevention Specialist functions as a role model for youth and serves as a resource for the community on issues related to substance abuse prevention among youth. The Prevention Specialist is expected to implement the CARE practice model and TCI behavior intervention techniques with fidelity and exhibit positive standards of conduct. The Prevention Specialist will be punctual, responsible, and supportive of the program; attend the required amount of training modules as required by the agency and grant funder; and attend meetings as required. The Prevention Specialist is responsible for program implementation and fulfilling the grant expectations. Other duties as assigned. SKILLS and ABILITIES Strong organizational and time management skills Ability to recruit sites for program implementation and community leaders within the target area. Ability to engage youth, parents, and community leaders around difficult issues and topics. Understanding of community needs and ability to analyze data about the service site Interpersonal and communication skills EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is preferred; experience working directly with adolescents and coalitions is preferred. Preference will be given to individuals who have worked directly with adolescents for 2+ years. Knowledge and/or experience about addiction, substance abuse interventions, and prevention. The personal characteristics and experiential background that enable the Prevention Specialist to provide appropriate care for children, develop positive, therapeutic relationships with them, guide them in their development, implement evidence-based curricula effectively, and actively engage the community in substance abuse prevention efforts. REQUIREMENTS Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain proof of automobile insurance. Ability to receive a DCFS/CANTS Clearance. CARE & TCI One of the essential job functions of any position within the agency is to align your performance with our overarching philosophy of CARE. All decisions, actions, communication, and performance should align with the six CARE principles (Developmentally Focused, Family Involved, Relationship Based, Ecologically Oriented, Competence Centered, and Trauma Informed). Not only must you complete the CARE training with satisfactory participation, but you must then put that training into practice in your everyday work.Every employee must also pass TCI training with a satisfactory grade in written and/or physical testing. All employees must remain current on refresher training that is provided monthly at all locations. You will be tested every 6 months on the physical portion, if applicable to your position. You will be tested annually on the written portion regardless of your position. If you are not current on your TCI refresher training every six months, you will be required to retake the full course. If you do not pass either test, you may be required to retake the full course.
