POSITION SUMMARY A clinically competent, registered, professional nurse who has demonstrated expertise in the perioperative field. Effectively delivers perioperative care to the surgical patient through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. FUNCTIONS RESPONSIBILITIES Adherence to established policyand proceduresMaintains good attendance record.Arrives to work punctually.Follows dress code.Observes confidentiality.Adheres to safety policies.Participates in continuing education.Follows Clinical and Administrative policy and procedures.Complies with surgery department policy and procedures.Complies with staffing rotations.Patient care coordinatorMaintained required Nursing Circulator duties as assignedAssesses the patient and provides for appropriate time out proceduresPlans patient care based on treatment planDocuments Intra-op patient careMaintains Patient Safety Practices at all timesCollaborates with other members of health care team.Instructs and educates patient and families.Conscientiously and continuously applies the principles and tools learnedDuring Quality training on a daily basis.Participates in performance improvement activities.Maintain sterile fieldInstrument and sponge counts as neededMaintains Infection Control practicesProvides patient care as assignedImplements patient careAdministers medications.Administers treatments.Functions as a clinical preceptor.Performs scrub and circulating duties.Interpersonal skillsCommunicates effectively.Maintains adaptability.Supports unit teams.Resolves problems.Supports customer service. MINIMALLY REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE Education Must be a graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing. Training and/or experience Must possess current hospital experience (within past five years) or be a new nursing graduate (within last two years). Nurses who do not meet this requirement must show proof of successful graduation from an approved refresher course.Must be knowledgeable regarding the nursing process and its application, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.Where appropriate, must be able to assess treatment and care for specific patient populations (i.e., neonatal, pediatrics, adolescents, geriatrics). Should possess the ability to understand and react effectively to their unique needs.Prefer a minimum of nine months recent perioperative experience or complete approved college perioperative program. Nurses who do not meet this requirement must complete a surgical competency-based orientation program successfully.Licensure, registration, and/or certificationMust possess a current license as a registered nurse from the state.Must be currently certified in CPR and/or be certified in ACLS within 6 months of hire date. Job Characteristics Works in an environment that frequently produces a high level of stress and mental fatigue. Organizes on a continuum due to the changing status of the patients and the environment. Equipment, machines, and tools Requires a mechanical ability to deal with a large number of machines and special equipment in the department, such as: Electrocautery units Autoclaves Tourniquets Positioning equipment Instrumentation of each service Perioperative suite in total
