Summary The University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) is looking for qualified individuals as Lecturer Is to provide instruction in our Masters in the Science of Information and Bachelor in the Science of Information. We are looking for a range of classroom support, including coaching teams of students, managing course sections, grading assignments, supporting teaching staff, and otherwise supporting our residential teaching programs. Options are available for full or part-time work. Applicants must be available for in-person instruction.We are looking for people with expertise in any of the following topics: python, agile software development, machine learning, information analysis, user experience design, user interfaces, or related information field experience. Who We Are The School of Information is a progressive, interdisciplinary school with five academic programs. UMSI delivers innovative, elegant, and ethical solutions connecting people, information, and technology. The school was one of the first iSchools in the nation and our interdisciplinary faculty spans such areas as data science, computational social science, human-computer interaction, social media, library and archival science, and digital curation. Our school mission is to create and share knowledge so that people will use information - with technology - to build a better world. Responsibilities* As a Lecturer at UMSI, you will help set up and adjust pre-designed UMSI courses on Coursera, grade, hold office hours, manage auto graders, answer student questions and communicate with students, develop course materials, and facilitate small group online discussions and student conversations. You will also work collaboratively with lead instructors, other instructional team members, and UMSI staff (who help with administration and student advising/life functions) to ensure that students receive an excellent education and are aware of support services in the larger UM and UMSI communities. You will continuously learn about the courses and future offerings, the program, and effective online pedagogy. Coordination with other members of the instructional team to ensure daily/evening/weekend coverage for students will be expected. Required Qualifications* Bachelor's degree in Data Science or a related field, such as Information, Computer Science, or Statistics 2+ years of experience programming with Python Current knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in data science applications and techniques Relevant, high-quality teaching experience and the equivalent of teaching/training roles in the industry Deep interest in improving pedagogy and collaboration to perform instructional best practices A commitment to inclusive teaching and cultural diversity Desired Qualifications* Master's degree in Data Science or a related field, such as Information, Computer Science, or Statistics Experience taking and/or building classes, particularly with the Coursera platform Experience with tools used in the full range of data science activities from Jupyter Notebooks to Altair to AWS Current participation in professional associations Union Affiliation This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
