Position Title: Legal Assistant for Unaccompanied Minors FLSA Classification : Non-exempt Full or part -time status : Full -t ime Department: Migration and Refugee Services Reports to : Senior Immigration Trial Attorney Hiring Range : $17.00-$22.00/ hr DOE Date written or last revised: March 2023 Primary Function of Position Th e Immigration Program offers legal services to unaccompanied minors. The legal assistant will provide clerical support to the Immigration Program and often work directly with clients at the direction of and with the supervision of legal staff. Major Position Responsibilities Commitment to the mission of Catholic Community Services of Utah (CCS) and the immigration and refugee resettlement programs. Responsible for many clerical duties including maintenance of client files (digital and physical), scheduling appointments, communicating with clients, and taking messages for legal staff via email and phone. Perform paralegal duties under the supervision of legal staff. These duties include meeting with clients directly to collect documents and client information to input into legal forms, collecting client responses to questionnaires, and the mailing of applications. Communicate clearly with clients and community partners about eligibility for CCS Immigration Program Services. Conducts Know Your Rights presentations and legal screening interviews to minors as needed. Documents all case work in the client's file or the electronic filing system. Offers interpretation and translation services as necessary . Maintains strict attorney/client confidentiality. Work Environment This position is in a professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Some local travel is required. Physical Demands This is largely a sedentary role and applicants must have the capacity to perform several hours of data entry without restriction. The position also requires the filing of documents and applicants should have the ability to lift file boxes (weight between 25-45 pounds), open filing cabinets, kneel, bend, reach or stand as necessary. This role includes driving locally. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Organizational and planning skills. Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks and responsibilities. Attention to detail and accuracy. Problem solving skills. Strong communication skills - written and oral. Adheres to deadlines of CCS and other agencies. Flexibility and adaptability. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Experience working in immigration law is preferred. Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing in both English and Spanish. Must be able to demonstrate an ability to maintain confidentiality regarding client cases. Advanced word processing and computer skills are required. Applicants should not require training in how to operate Microsoft Word or Excel. A pplicants should be able to demonstrate personal qualities of openness, compassion, and graciousness when helping clients assess and face legal obstacles. Education, Training and Experience Bachelor's Degree or paralegal certification required. Proficiency in Spanish and English. Knowledge of relevant M icrosoft Office 365 applications. Keyboarding and data entry skills. Knowledge of office management systems and procedures. Experience working in a law office or working with children preferred. Background S creen ing R equirement Must be able to pass a national BCI/FBI background check. Licenses, certifications and credentials Current Utah driver's license, proof of auto insurance with minimum policy liability limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per incident , 21 years of age or older, a clean driving record, and ability to meet CCS vehicle safety requirements. Position status and expected schedule This is a full -time (40 hours a week) and non-exempt position. Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
