This Posting Is Open Until Filled JOB SUMMARY: Performs skilled automotive and equipment maintenance and repair work. Work involves participating in the timely and through diagnosis and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment and relate electrical, electronic, hydraulic and mechanical systems. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Receive general direction and supervision from the Fleet Shop Supervisor. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Provides guidance and oversight of daily operations, and activities of the Fleet Mechanics. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The duties described herein are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Perform complex and specialized repair, maintenance, and diagnostics of County vehicles and construction equipment including, but not limited to automobiles, vans, buses, trucks, loaders, backhoes, motor graders, tractor trailers, rollers, and dozers. Resolve difficult diagnoses and troubleshooting of electronic, hydraulic, transmission, and engine systems. Perform a wide range of preventative maintenance and routine engine tune-ups, lubricating, and servicing of vehicles and equipment. Inspect, repair, or replace brake, ignition, and steering systems, suspensions, hydraulic pumps and controls, transmissions, differentials, and heating/air conditioning systems. Rebuild engine on a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment. Remove and replace carburetors, fuel injection components, fuel pumps, cooling systems, and emissions and exhaust components. Train and provide technical assistance to less experienced mechanics. Perform welding and fabrication to repair equipment. Repairs body damage, mirrors, lights, radios, and windshields. Utilize technical manuals and diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot and complete repairs. Ensure the safe and reliable equipment/vehicles are available to meet operational requirements. Perform snow removal and flood and wildfire control. Maintains shop equipment and work site to ensure a clean and safe working environment. Assist in employee compliance with safe work practices, County policy and procedure, and EPA standards. Assist in the maintenance and stocking of parts, equipment, and supplies as assigned. Maintains accurate maintenance, labor, and supply records. OTHER DUTIES Performs other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. Education - Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by vocational training in automotive mechanics. Experience - Five years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities. Licenses and Certifications : - Possession of and ability to maintain a Colorado Class "B" CDL with Hazmat endorsement and a current DOT medical card. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Preventative maintenance and repair programs for light and heavy duty equipment. All types of gasoline and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, hydraulics, shop equipment and procedures and welding and cutting. Electronic troubleshooting using electrical and computer equipment. A wide variety of electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and mechanical systems of gasoline and diesel powered light and heavy equipment. Maintenance and repair tools, equipment, techniques, and practices. General operation of automotive and light, medium, and heavy construction equipment. Safe operation of a variety of hand and power tools. Practices and procedures to meet accepted quality and safety standards. Ability to: Diagnose and repair malfunctions on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. Accurately diagnose, identify, and repair related, potential, or existing problems Perform duties independently without close supervision. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community. Operate and move vehicles and equipment as needed. Maintain and repair assigned vehicles or equipment to meet service deadlines and established performance standards and objectives. Operate and communicate on two-way radios. Understand and follow written and verbal instructions. Pass random drug and alcohol testing. Provide and maintain proper hand tools to perform job requirements. Maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with co-workers and provide training and guidance in a tactful manner. Ability to enter work orders, parts and other data into various types of computer software. Licenses and Certifications: - Possession of and ability to maintain a Colorado Class "B" CDL with Hazmat endorsement and a current DOT medical card. Certifications desired in Diesel Mechanics and Air Conditioning but not required. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Various heavy equipment, hand tools, machines typical to an automotive shop. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to read and understand written documents, technical service manuals, and related materials and gauges as required for the performance of the job. Requires hearing for warning signals, radios, and diagnostic equipment. Require occasional use of both hands and manual dexterity to operate hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment. May require the ability to sit and perform administrative and/or computer work for significant periods of time. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Requires a full range of body movement including pulling/pushing, reaching, bending/stooping, kneeling, squatting, and twisting for occasional use of tools, to inspect vehicles and equipment, occasionally perform maintenance, and to frequently negotiate around equipment. Require sufficient hearing and speech ability to communicate verbally in response to inquiries, complaints, and to speak to individuals or groups in an informational or instructional situation. Working time may require irregular hours and/or on-call status. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of the job. Work is conducted in both an indoor shop and outdoor field environments. Incumbent experiences routine exposures and hazards of a typical office environment and frequent exposure to all types of weather conditions, dust, solvents, grease and oils.
