Summary: Performs laboratory tests to determine chemical, physical, or biological characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous samples for such purposes as quality control, process control, project support, or NPDES compliance. The individual in this position works together with and under the guidance of a Laboratory Analyst or a Laboratory Chemist in the performance of some of their duties. Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned) Sets up, calibrates, and operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as microscopes, centrifuge, sample homogenizer, laboratory balance, colorimeter, spectrophotometer, pH and Ion analyzer meters, BOD auto analyzer, and other laboratory equipment. Runs qualitative or quantitative analysis to determine the presence and content of elements or substances such as, but not limited to, total and volatile suspended solids, total, volatile, and dissolved solids, settleable solids, pH, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, ORP, ODI, dissolved sulfide, alkalinity, acidity, volatile acids, and fecal coliform bacteria. Accurately records test procedures and results in bench logs, standardized forms, and/or laboratory computers via use of electronic bench sheets prepared in Microsoft Excel utilizing the laboratory information management system (LIMS). Cleans and/or sterilizes laboratory equipment. Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulae. May collect and deliver samples to the laboratory for testing and record chain of custody data. Collects digester gas samples. Performs field analyses, as required. Education and Experience: An Associate's degree in chemistry, biology or related life science and two years experience in a laboratory environment is required. A Bachelor's degree or additional work experience can be substituted for this requirement. Language Skills: Must have the ability to read and understand safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Reasoning Ability: Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and reach with hands and arms; and may occasionally be required to sit or walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in an environment typical of an activated sludge wastewater treatment facility laboratory. These conditions are compliant with all OSHA regulations and include: incidental VOC's, temperature-controlled work environment, and vagrant odors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
