POSITION TITLE: Lab Technician 1 REPORTS TO: Quality Manager LOCATION: Tooele Plant POSITION BASE: Exempt Objectives Works as part of a team to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the plant to maximize operational efficiency in an environment of continuous training and improvement. Will perform quality control sampling, testing, routine lab equipment inspections, and basic lab data recording. Provide prompt, accurate, and non-biased quality control feedback to production team members and plant management. Organization Structure The Laboratory Technician 1 will report to the Laboratory Technician 2/Physical Tester (Quality Control & Assurance Coordinator in lieu of Laboratory Technician 2/Physical Tester) who reports to the Quality Control & Assurance Coordinator (Plant Manager in lieu of Quality Control & Assurance Coordinator). While on shift during a production run the Laboratory Technician 1 may be the only member of the Quality Control Department onsite; as a result, directly reporting to and following general instructions from the Production Foreman on shift is required; however, all test procedures and methods are to be done per training provided by the Quality Control Department. Nature and Scope Perform daily cleaning and organization of lab areas as directed and required. Perform basic inspection and cleaning of lab equipment. Accurately complete the required ASTM test procedures for finished supplementary cementitious product limited in scope to basic physical tests. Onsite training of tests is a continuous activity and available. Fineness, moisture, density, pressed pellet preparation Accurately complete the required internal specified material tests Store, stock and handle all laboratory materials and sample materials. Have an open mind and dialogue regarding continuous improvement, training, and skillset development. Provide general labor services as needed in the plant as required. Operate mobile equipment, product shipping, reclaim and transfer equipment as needed. Assist when needed with basic repairs to facilitate plant operations. Flexibility in work schedule in a 24/7 manufacturing facility including shift work. Specific Accountabilities Perform work area safety risk assessments and corrective actions including housekeeping, spill clean-up, and preventative maintenance routines. Maintain and improve personal knowledge of process, quality control and basic mechanical/electrical maintenance. Test method training and review will be a regular part of the job. Gather, label, prepare, and store material samples, of both production and final product shipments. Perform all entry level and basic hourly test methods while the plant is in operation. Provide prompt feedback to the Production Staff on shift regarding hourly QC results, while also keeping the quality control team informed. Perform all entry level and basic test methods and material analyses per internal, ASTM, and AASHTO standards and specifications. Fineness, bulk density, pressed powder pellet preparation, moisture, LOI Record all test results in a legible manner in the appropriate location. Assists in maintaining lab supply stocks. Identify, report, and assist in resolution of safety and environmental concerns and work practices that may affect the Health & Safety of employees or other parties. Assist other departments as needed. Safely operate mobile equipment as required to meet shift production targets and perform clean up as necessary for an efficient safe operation. Perform all other duties as may be assigned from time to time. Work any shifts, including weekends and paid holidays as schedules dictate and work a reasonable amount of overtime. This job will include exposure to heights greater than 50 feet. Qualifications: Education & Experience: A High School diploma or GED. Knowledge in mobile equipment operation; good communication skills; time management; basic computer literacy; legible handwriting & good notation skills. Preferred experience in cement or other powder manufacturing; chemical analysis techniques; physical material property testing; and prior shift work. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Communicate effectively with fellow workers and supervisors, ability to write detailed notes. Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, pressure, and density by hand and via computer program. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited guidelines exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Driver's License Any training certifications (ACI, ASTM, mechanical, electrical, equipment operations) given consideration Physical Demands : The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, proximity to electrical equipment, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but occasionally loud.
