International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) The International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS) serves Stevens' international students, faculty, research scholars, and staff, and provides pre and post-admission services to incoming international students. ISSS administers an increasingly complex array of government regulations; supports the US Department of Homeland Security's SEVIS system (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System), and manages the collection and entry of data and information in SEVIS to track the Stevens international student and scholar population in non-immigrant status. ISSS manages the Department of State's Exchange Visitor Program and its regulatory requirements. The ISSS is Stevens' primary resource for issues related to immigration compliance for international students, faculty, research scholar and staff as it relates to specific admissions, academic, enrollment, employment and travel matters. ISSS designs, plans and implements international student/scholar orientation programs and a variety of workshops to ensure immigration compliance and contributes to international students' cultural adjustment and academic success. Job Description Summary: The International Student and Scholar Advisor (Advisor) position is responsible for advising international students and scholars with respect to F-1 and J-1 visa regulations. The Advisor performs duties of a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), and liaises with government agencies, including the Student and Exchange Visitor program (SEVP), U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Department of State. Interpret F-1 and J-1 visa regulations to ensure compliance, and provides counseling and advising support to international students and scholars on immigration and other ancillary matters. The Advisor supports the overall objectives and efforts of ISSS. The International Student and Scholar Advisor reports to the Director, Office of International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS). Essential Duties & Responsibilities: * Perform duties of a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) * Liaise with government agencies including U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Department of State * Interpret and analyze F-1 and J-1 visa regulations to ensure compliance, and provide counseling and advising support to international students and scholars on immigration related matters, and other support issues * Evaluate immigration eligibility and assist students to obtain F-1/J-1 immigration benefits such as CPT/OPT /STEM extensions and Academic Training as outlined in the regulations, and process I-20s and DS-2019s as required * Evaluate visa eligibility documents for F-1 and J-I populations; produce Form I-20 for F-1 students and Form DS-2019 for J-1 visitors; work in immigration government databases, including Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and Terra Dotta, International Student & Scholar Management (ISSM) electronic database system for student case management; ensure correct reporting to maintain US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), US. Department of State (DoS) and US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulatory compliance; * Serve as a resource on immigration regulations, policies and practices to faculty and staff * Provide immigration advising in both written and verbal communications; hold regular advising appointments with students and scholars; enact new protocols to enhance customer service capabilities of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services * Stay current with new developments in the field of international education; engage in professional training to maintain up-to-date skills and knowledge in immigration advising * Support the ISSS leadership in the implementation of strategic planning, helping the ISSS leadership to update and improve immigration service policies and procedures; document work flow, policies, and procedures as directed by the ISSS leadership as part of collaborative office assessment * Assist with check in and SEVIS registration * Contribute to the development, implementation, and presentation of specialized workshops and programs, and in designing and updating handouts, forms, presentations, and the ISSS website * Assist in the maintenance of various database systems associated with assigned duties and responsibilities, including ISSM and the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) * Performs other job related duties as assigned Minimum Requirements: * Bachelor's degree is required in International Education, Intercultural Communication, Higher Education Administration, Management, Counseling, Liberal Arts, Communications, etc. * A minimum of three (3) years' relevant experience in higher education advising international students or scholars; or equivalent combination of education and experience; extensive knowledge and experience working with the federal SEVIS system is required; comprehensive knowledge of immigration regulations and regulations applicable to the Exchange Visitor Program. * Ability to organize, plan and direct special projects. Ability to exercise independent judgment. * Experience developing workshops, training and presenting. Possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. * Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident to be designated DSO and ARO. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for dealing with and building relationships with students, faculty, community leaders, and colleagues. * Possess strong analytical skills and have a solid knowledge of immigration regulations related to students and scholars in various visa categories, primarily F-1 and J-1 status. * Excellent knowledge and technical skills using case management application systems such as Terra Dotta, ISSM, SEVIS, Slate and Workday; must have skills in social media communication management. * Must have the ability to perform computerized tasks which may include any combination of word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, internet or web-based applications. * Must be organized, detail oriented, be able to prioritize tasks, and to work under mandated deadlines in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. * Experience in developing and delivering workshops and presentations on immigration related matters. * Provide a student-centric approach to customer service * Must be able to work independently and responsibly; ability to organize and manage a large number of details. * Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and pass a criminal history record check to assume the role of Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), which is an essential component of the position.
