Position Summary The Des Moines Art Center's Community Access Program (CAP) discovers creative ways of making artwork and art-making accessible to those in the community who otherwise lack these opportunities. We partner with a diverse group of teaching artists via Independent Contract, working in various media to facilitate free art classes at the Des Moines Art Center and in the community. CAP teaching artists use a student-centered method, creating a safe, respectful environment where everyone's art is valued as an outlet for self-expression. The Teaching Artist for the Community Access Program independently develops and teaches art classes, creating a safe space for art making, confidence building, and self-expression. Essential Functions Develop art curriculum appropriate to the setting, age, and skill level of student groups; research, plan, and develop class content and corresponding supplies and materials Demonstrate strong classroom management skills to ensure a safe environment for all students Ability to build relationships and work effectively with a diverse community Display high emotional intelligence; develop strong relationships with and secure the trust and confidence of students and community partners while maintaining appropriate boundaries Maintain regular correspondence with the CAP Manager and CAP Assistant to communicate supply needs, attendance reports, progress updates, and to advocate for students' interests Travel to offsite programs to teach classes as scheduled. Must have own vehicle for transportation to and from such programs and/or locations. Other Responsibilities Prepare workspaces before class and ensures a tidy space following sessions Attend CAP Teaching Artist meetings each term Photo-document classes as permitted by community partner photo release permissions or restrictions Alert CAP Manager and CAP Assistant to any planned absences Act in ways that reflect favorably on the Art Center and maintains professional standards in the quality of using one's best judgement. Adheres to the Des Moines Art Center Code of Ethics. Required Education, Experience, and/or Professional Certification Minimum of one (1) year required: experience teaching diverse audiences or in non-traditional settings. Trauma-informed facilitation is desirable. Ability to create positive, high quality learning experiences for all students Excellent communication and organization skills Strong arts background with artistic practice preferred Decision Making Regularly exercises independent judgement and discretion in matters related to class content, materials, and classroom management. Professional Partnerships The Independent Teaching Artist for the Community Access Program partners with the CAP Manager, and regularly communicates with the CAP Assistant. This person has constant contact with students of all ages and frequently interacts with the Art Center's Learning and Engagement department staff and other program partners. Special Considerations (Schedule, Work Environment, Physical Factors, Required Travel, etc.) The Teaching Artist for the Community Access Program is an Independent Contract position, working approximately 2-20 hours per week, for which the rate is $23.00/hour. Independent Contract work for the Art Center is performed in a variety of settings throughout the Des Moines metro area. Classes are generally held indoors; may, on occasion, be outdoors where exposure to hot or cold weather conditions is possible. Exposure to environmental conditions, such as water, noise, or fumes, occurs frequently Classes are scheduled on weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Infrequently, classes may be scheduled during evening hours.
