Turner Industries is hiring a Hazardous Material Technician to join our team in the Lake Charles area. This position identifies, removes, packs, transports, and disposes of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, transmission fluid, radioactive materials, or contaminated soil. Specialized training and certification in hazardous materials handling and transport required. May operate earth-moving equipment or trucks. Non-exempt role; Reports to the Foreman; Assigned duties according to specific procedures / work is checked frequently. Support day to day environmental and waste operations, including: Hazardous and nonhazardous materials transportation and shipping Waste characterization and profiling Manifest generation Waste labeling Environmental field planner/coordinator Fenceline field service monitor/coordinator Wastewater compliance assistance, including onsite autosampler repair LPDES water and waste Sampling Management of waste tracking systems Site catalyst reclamation and disposal coordination Vendor service coordination Field inspections (waste and water) Spill response evaluator Drinking water monitoring and sampling Turnaround support: Turnaround and project box movement coordination Turnaround and site projects logistical support Turnaround waste coverage (may include night shifts) Qualifications (has now or can get certified in a short period of time): RCRA solid waste certified Hazwoper certified Hazmat certified Functional Requirements: • Assemble temporary equipment or structures. • Inspect work sites to identify potential environmental or safety hazards. • Prepare hazardous waste for processing, shipping, and disposal. • Complete inspections, monitor systems, collect samples, and report test results. • Record operational and environmental data on reports and enter data into systems. • Operate machines or equipment to remove, package, store, or transport loads of waste materials. • Decontaminate equipment or sites to remove hazardous or toxic substances. • Mix substances or compounds needed for work activities. • Pour materials into or on designated areas. • Material handling in accordance with site specific health and safety program and standard operating procedures. • Comply with prescribed safety procedures or federal laws regulating waste disposal methods and shipping of waste. • Perform additional assignments per supervisor's direction. Qualification Standards: • High school or equivalent • Industrial experience required (2 years preferred) • Basic computer skills preferred • Basic knowledge of hand tools • 40-Hour HAZWOPER (29CFR 1910.120) and HAZMAT (Title 49 CFR Parts 171-180) training required • RCRA solid waste certification, may be required according to jobsite duties • TWIC Card (or ability to obtain a TWIC card) • Post-offer drug/alcohol screen and physical evaluation • Pre-Employment qualification test if applicable • Hazard Communication orientation/test • Turner Industries Group Indoctrination • OSHA approved corrective eye wear (Z87) • Job site orientation • Job site "Personal Protective Equipment" requirements (hearing protection, safety glasses, long sleeve shirt, gloves, steel toe boots, etc.) • Applicant/employee must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace Physical Involvement: May be required to do the following: climbing ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc. above and below ground level; maintaining balance on ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc.; reaching in all directions; handling and manipulating objects and materials; coordinating the movements of eyes, hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment; lifting 30 to 50 pounds from ground level, waist level, and/or overhead; carrying objects, tools, equipment, etc.; standing / sitting; walking; pushing; pulling; bending; kneeling; crouching/squatting; seeing with or without correction; hearing with or without correction; wearing respirator and other PPE; typing / data entry; stepstool use; work in excessive heat; work in excessive cold; work in loud environment Mental Involvement: May be required to do the following: follow set procedures and standards; follow oral/or written directions; knowledge of federal, state and company standards and regulations; ability to read and write; ability to recognize and report safety hazards etc.; interpret written plans and blueprints; applying basic mathematical skills; planning work and selecting proper tools; comparing and understanding differences in the size, shape and form of lines, figures and objects; picturing and evaluating solid objects from drawing or diagrams using standards that can be measured or checked; ability to communicate with others effectively; ability to work in a team and get along with others; ability to learn new tasks; remember processes, maintain focus, and complete tasks; ability to remain calm under pressure; manage time and expectations across multiple projects; ensure that work is done in a consistent manner and in compliance with directions • Location: industrial maintenance and construction sites; pipe fabrication facility • Mobility Barriers to Access Job Site: uneven ground level; obstructed pathways; work performed at low and/or high elevations; work performed in confined areas • Climatic/Environmental Conditions at Job Site: predominately outdoor climate; may be exposed to extreme hot or cold weather, excessive humidity, rain, etc.; various noise levels caused by tools, machinery, equipment, etc.; potential exposure to chemical substances Turner Industries is an equal employment opportunity employer.
