Summary The University of Michigan is looking for a full-time Assistant Director to lead and direct all aspects of management and administration of the Global Center for Climate Change Impacts on Transboundary Waters (see additional details below). In this position, you will coordinate with other team members including staff, students, fellows, and faculty, to facilitate event planning, schedule small and large group team meetings, advance interdisciplinary research, implement a vision for connections between research and policy, and manage communication with research and engagement teams and relevant partner organizations. A focus of this position is providing guidance, and assigning tasks, to the Global Center Project Manager (currently based at McMaster University) in consultation with Global Center Principal Investigators.The Global Center is a major research center, and you will be expected to play a role in publishing (i.e. developing and submitting peer-reviewed manuscripts to high quality, internationally-recognized journals), and to collaborate with internal partners on grant writing that advances the interdisciplinary goals of the program. You will also use project management skills to ensure that all tasks are coordinated and completed within the prescribed timeline. You will report to Professor Andrew Gronewold of the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability.This position will be a two-year term-limited appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent on funding availability and performance. Salary will be determined based on experience. Remote and flexible work agreements may be made to support partial off-site work at a remote location. Who We Are The Global Center is a multi-institutional, 5-year initiative (launched in January 2024) funded jointly by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The Center serves as a unifying platform for understanding how climate change is impacting, and will continue to impact water resources that span geopolitical boundaries. The Center is initially focusing on the Great Lakes region and the Rio Grande, setting the stage for extensions continentally and globally (in part through an external advisory board). The Center's work will be implemented across three interwoven hubs focusing on hydroclimate (HC) science, ecosystem function and water quality (EWQ), and climate-ready communities and transboundary governance (CRTG). Collaborate with and advise Global Center leadership on operations, planning, and related activities. Lead development of short and long-term programs and planning in consultation with Center PIs and Co-Investigators. Represent Center among professional and policy associations and to the general public. Provide guidance and assign tasks to Center Project Manager (currently at McMaster University) in consultation with Center PIs). Coordinate activities with other Centers and Institutes related to (i.e. with which Center PIs are affiliated) the Global Center, including the Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Strategy (CLARS; coordinated in partnership with PI Krantzberg), and the University of Michigan Center for Sustainable Systems (CSS). Foster grant and fundraising opportunities by generating interest among the Global Center teams, and generate forward momentum in the attainment of additional funds. Create initiatives that, over time, establish opportunities for different teams and members of the Global Center to publish collaborative interdisciplinary work. Conduct domestic and international travel to conferences, project sponsors, and project partners, with up to approximately 3 trips per year and approximately 1 week per trip. Build and strengthen active relationships and engagement with main constituencies, including faculty experts, Indigenous Peoples, community partners, Advisory Board members (via Advisory Board co-chairs) and other potential stakeholders. Administrative Oversight Plan and manage the administrative and operational activities of the Center in partnership with (separate position) Center Project Manager, currently based at McMaster University.Coordinate with Center cluster leads and McMaster-based Project Manager to develop and document project plans and reports, as required, to funding agencies (i.e. NSF, SSHRC, and NSERC). Develop fundraising goals and collaborate with the Research Administration team to develop proposals for external funding, funded grants and contracts. In coordination with the Research Administrator, track allocation of project resources, including financial and personnel, as guided by Global Center principal investigators and faculty participants, and in collaboration with McMaster-based Project Manager. Assist with coordination, hiring, and monitoring appointments and coordinate the hiring processes and monitoring appointments for University of Michigan-based Center's postdoctoral fellows and Graduate Student Research Assistants (GSRAs). Assist, in partnership with Global Center's designated Research Administrator and PIs, management of the Center's NSF-funded finances and budgetary responsibilities. NSERC and SSHRC funded finances and budgets will be managed by Project Manager at McMaster and NSERC and SSHRC Investigators. Coordinate meeting events, scheduling, and team member travel in consultation with McMaster-based Project Manager (including coordination of host locations for routine group meetings). Communications Prepare reports and other materials regarding the Center's progress towards performance goals, focusing on those required by funding agencies (i.e. NSF, SSHRC, NSERC). Supervise, with McMaster-based Center Project Manager, creation of detailed internal project communications plans. Coordinate Global Center communications and publicity efforts with the Center's McMaster-based Project Manager and associated communications teams at Center University leads (including University of Michigan and McMaster University). Organize, promote and coordinate hosting of events with partner institutions. Required Qualifications* Master's Degree in environmental and climate science, policy, or planning, or closely related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience leading a Center, institute, or comparable complex academic or research-oriented organization. Demonstrated experience using project management skills and approaches to create, track, and meet established project timelines. Demonstrated success coordinating projects, developing and implementing programs, and securing funding across multiple institutions or organizations. Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications for multiple audience types. Desired Qualifications* Doctorate Degree in environmental and climate science, policy, or planning, or closely related fields. Experience in federal agency and philanthropic grant writing and reporting. Experience leading teams through strategic planning and multi-team project coordination.
