The General Maintenance Mechanic, under general supervision, repairs and maintains a variety of vehicles, tools, equipment and machinery; repairs, fashions, alters, erects and installs a variety of assemblies, structures, or metal articles; and performs related work as required. The General Maintenance Mechanic will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society. They will support and enhance a clean, safe, enjoyable, and educational experience at the Detroit Zoo facilities by actively engaging in the enforcement of Customer Service Standards, and specifically by knowing and understanding the Detroit Zoological Society's "SCOPE" of service, animal care, community relations and park appearance guidelines; by enforcing safety and security policies, and following all other policies set by the organization. The General Maintenance Mechanic will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality. This job description is by no means all inclusive and may be subject to change during a performance period due to the needs of the Detroit Zoological Society and its leadership. This document will be reviewed on a continual basis and will be modified as needed. Principal Duties and Responsibilities In accordance with general and specific instructions, but with individual responsibility for the quality of work and some latitude for determining proper work methods, working alone or assisted by other workers: Performs any and all automotive or mechanical repair or maintenance work tasks to all types of mobile equipment and typified by the following examples: repairs, adjusts, alters and services automobiles, trucks, construction and landscape equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, rollers and sweepers, rail and track equipment, including all auxiliary equipment mounted on or associated with such mobile equipment. Repairs, installs, services and, as required, alters any and all tools, equipment and machinery such as air driven tools, hoists, conveyors, pumps, motors, chainsaws, mowers, small appliances, turnstiles, etc. Repairs, constructs, alters, moves, erects, and installs a variety of assemblies, structures and other metal articles such as animal exhibits and displays, special purpose cages, metal-lined crates, heavy metal doors and gates, cyclone fencing, ventilation or heating ducts, metal railings or platforms. Uses a variety of machine shop and metal working equipment, acetylene and arc welding outfits, and other power or hand tools to repair, alter or fabricate parts as needed to complete any work assignments. As assigned, assist with a variety of special events, grounds tasks, mowing, weeding, general labor, snow removal, refuse and manure collection, and construction projects. Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time. Qualifications Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED Considerable experience in repairing, adjusting and overhauling a variety of automotive or other comparable power-driven mechanical equipment including some common types of construction equipment and/or industrial-type stationary machinery, and preferably both. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable ability to weld, braze, and cut with electric arc and acetylene torch. Reasonable knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in repairing and maintaining automotive and other comparable mechanical equipment. Some knowledge of the use of common machine shop equipment. Some familiarity with the tools, methods and materials used in the metal working trades. Physically and mentally capable of performing all the duties of the job. Required to provide the tools necessary to perform the automotive repair work assigned. Must possess a valid State of Michigan Drivers License. Preferred One year of similar work experience. Courses in general shop and automotive repair. Working Conditions Work under conditions including adverse weather, outside environment and heights. Physical Requirements Physical work is a primary part of the job: walking, standing, stooping, kneeling and bending for long periods of time; must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
