Education Coordinator General Description The Education Coordinator will deliver high-quality programming in cooperation with other staff and volunteers. They will support the Education team and existing organizational community partnerships, including long-term and short-term programs, both on the Detroit Zoo's grounds and off-ground in the community. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Facilitate programming that reflects best practices in education, including inquiry-based and project-based learning experiences. Engage guests and program participants in building a conceptual understanding of science concepts. Organize and present to educational groups on various life science, environmental, and humane education topics. Work with colleagues and/or volunteer educators to implement programs. Actively engage with colleagues to support departmental goals and objectives. Supervise participants to ensure a safe and effective learning experience in a variety of environments. Promote the DZS's mission to create meaningful connections between people, animals and the natural world so all can thrive to guests, program participants and outside organizations. Actively pursue, participate in, and share professional development opportunities (including onsite workshops, webinars, offsite conferences, etc.). Assist with a variety of special events and projects. Availability to work early mornings, evenings and weekends, as needed. Qualifications Education and Experience Associate's degree in general science, education, zoology, biology, or other closely related field OR equivalent experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Familiar with youth developmental stages and best pedagogical practices to meet those needs. Ability to use audio-visual equipment. Skilled in short video creation and editing processes and software. Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize various software programs. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Able to operate various sizes and styles of motor vehicles. Requires valid Michigan Driver's License. Preferred Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an informal or formal learning institution. General knowledge of current state and national curriculum standards. General knowledge of conservation strategies in captive and field conservation programs, zoology, biology, and life sciences. Teaching certification and/or experience in a formal/informal learning environment. Working Conditions Work is performed indoors in an office environment and frequently outdoors, with exposure to all seasonal weather conditions. Work may be performed onsite and offsite as required. Frequent travel throughout SE Michigan with the possibility of regional, national, and/or international travel. Physical Requirements Able to perform the essential functions of the role with or without reasonable accommodations, visual acuity sufficient to read standard text, often on video display monitors, standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 20 lbs., and sitting for extended periods.
