Capella University seeks an entrepreneurial, mission-driven, academic leader who is a business, systems, and enterprise thinker, to serve as the dean, School of Social and Behavioral Sciences with strategic oversight of the following programs: counseling, marriage and family therapy, education, and psychology. Key to this role is a blend of business acumen with a focus on strategic vision for building credibility in the external environment, providing strategic and/or operational oversight to multiple programs, driving innovation and academic excellence, a record of accomplishment of scholarly publications and presentations, strong people leadership skills, and the ability to work effectively across a matrixed and collaborative organization. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Develop and contribute to the overall business and academic strategy for the school and university. Promote a culture of innovation in the leadership team and faculty to prepare business, technology, and health care administration professionals of the future. Communicate school strategy and key objectives to leadership team to support strategic execution and culture. Direct the internal operations including driving efficiency and effectiveness of the school in partnership with other academic leaders to meet and exceed academic and financial targets. Promotes retention and persistence / completion through use evidence-based practices. Provides thought leadership to the university and the wider competency-based community. Promotes various continuous improvement and assessment activities designed to document the academic quality of programs. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support marketing, product, and enrollment strategies. Supports efficiencies through leading school through strategic streamlining of courses/programs. Partner with shared services (cross-functional partners) and Academic Affairs to ensure programs align with overall university strategy, profession trends, and accreditation standards (e.g., HLC (Higher Learning Commission), CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs), COAMFTE (Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education), APA (American Psychological Association), PELSB (Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board), Minnesota Board of School Administrators), ABAI (Association for Behavior Analysis International Accreditation Board), and NASP (National Association of School Psychologists). Oversee talent development strategy for the school through rigorous hiring practices that reflect mindfulness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, meaningful professional development opportunities, accountability, performance management, and succession planning. Plan and lead a School Advisory Board that cultivates input from diverse stakeholders. Partner with the Provost and other internal stakeholders to execute strategic, operational, and quality metrics. Champion change with relentless focus and ability to prioritize work in the best interest of the learners and university. Understand and value Capella's competency-based education (CBE) model and promote the model in the school's teaching philosophy, tools, best practices, and academic standards internally and externally. Further advance the brand and credibility of the university through the demonstrating the following leadership behaviors: Enterprise thinking Learner centricity Getting the right things done Understanding the value of speed Demonstrating courage and fearlessness Setting high integrity standards for themselves and their teams Hiring and developing the best talent and cultivating high team performance Job Skills: Ability to operate independently (leading, collaborating and executing) in a highly ambiguous, matrixed environment with high interdependencies. Ability to leverage change management principles to drive university initiatives while balancing school needs. Lead by listening, be highly collaborative, thinking with eye toward diversity, equity and inclusion, and productively contributing opinions to critical decision-making processes. A record of accomplishment in meeting operational and financial targets in an educational environment, including: Articulating a compelling vision of academic excellence and executing toward that vision. Developing and accessing high-quality academic programs Experience supporting, developing, and promoting regional and specialized accreditations. Prior experience with HLC, and related specialized accreditors (CACREP, COAMFTE, APA, PELSB, MNBOSA, ABAI, NASP, etc.) including authoring a self-study. Effectively representing an institution to external academic and business constituencies, with a continuous eye to the academic profile of the institution. Successfully building, managing, and working with a diverse faculty and learner base to meet the institution's goals. Developing creative, innovative strategies designed to promote learner success. Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Demonstrate excellent analytical, organization, and presentation skills. Work Experience: Previous experience in online higher education as a primary mode of delivery. At least five (5) full-time years of significant experience, with increasingly progressive responsibility in a corporate enterprise setting and/or higher education, including executive and direct supervisory experience. Education: A doctorate in related field from a regionally accredited institution. Other: Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time.Must be able to lift 25 lbs.Typical office setting.Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor.Travel via plane, car, and metro may be required to perform this job.Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant.Access information using a computer.Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.Effectively cope with stressful situations.Strong mental acuity.Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.Other essential functions and marginal job functions are subject to modification.SEI is an Equal Opportunity employer committed to a diverse and inclusive community.
