Mentorship with other talented management staff. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Controller will oversee all financial and accounting activities, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial operations. This role is critical in support the CFO and the Agency's Leadership by providing accurate financial data, analysis, and strategic insights. The Controller will manage the accounting team, ensuring compliance with all financial policies and procedures, and will be responsible for the preparation of financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred. Prior experience with nonprofit accounting, grant management and Federal grant requirements is required. Thorough knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting standards. Public accounting experience is desired. Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Valid driver license and insured vehicle available for use on the job with acceptable drive record for the past 3 years. Candidate must pass a comprehensive MWVCAA background screening prior to employment. Successful registration with the Central Background Registry of the Child Care Division. Candidate must pass pre-employment and random drug screenings. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation. Performs data input and utilizes a calculator with speed and accuracy. Demonstrated skills working with personal computers, databases, accounting software and financial management systems. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employee will also perform other reasonably related business duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required. Accounting Systems and Operations Maintains expert knowledge of GAAP, OMB Uniform Administrative Requirements, and cost principles of agency grant agreements and awards while applying the information to oversee accounting functions. Supervise accounting staff and ensures adequacy of agency internal controls and procedures related to grant activity, accounting and reporting. Manages the following accounting operations: Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Fixed Assets, General Ledger and Accounting and Revenue Recognition. Organizes, plans, prepares and oversees all tasks related to month and year-end accounting and reporting, including: the 401(k) audit, the annual audit, preparation of data for financial statements and the completion of the agency's 990 reporting. Financial Oversight and Internal Controls Applies advanced accounting theory and accounting and management skills to develop and implement agency accounting policies, procedures and use of systems, all while ensuring accuracy, the control of data and the expenditure of funds. Oversees the maintenance of accounting controls and the preparation of prescribed reports. Prepares analyses to evaluate risk and then makes evidence-based suggestions and/or develops alternatives and recommends agency action. Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices. Budgeting and Forecasting Collaborate with Program Directors to prepare grant budget. Monitor grant budget performance and provide variance analysis. Develop and maintain grant forecasting analysis. Reports and Communication Propose journal entries to adjust and correct agency accounts per analyses and reconciliations and assigns to accounting staff for input. Reviews and posts all transactions recorded in accounting system. Assists in preparation of monthly, agency-wide financial statements and quarterly financials for presentation to the Board of Directors. Coordinates and directs the preparation of financial forecasts and report variances. Develops reports for use in management decision-making. Prepares analyses requested by the CFO to aid in financial management of the agency; recognize issues that should be raised and prepares data for presentation to the CFO using own initiative. Engages with others using respect and positive communication at all times. Team Leadership and Development Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team. Foster a positive and collaborative team environment. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Directly supervises approximately 3-10 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities for this position include interviewing, hiring, and training employees, as well as planning, assigning, and directing their work and appraising their performance. The Controller is also responsible for rewarding and disciplining employees when applicable and addressing their complaints to resolution. Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Generally proceeds independently in accordance with Agency policies, guidelines, and initiatives. Mobility within the office and between agency sites required. Able to remain calm during situations where staff or clients may be escalated. Able to mitigate stress associated with a busy office and deadlines. WORK ENVIRONMENT Indoor, office work environment with frequent interruptions and demands. Working with coworkers/clients over the phone and in-person. Occasional noise and distractions in work spaces. Occasional remote work as needed. This position primarily requires on-site work. Ability to work outside of normal business hours to meet deadlines, including evenings and weekends.
