Learning to Work (LTW) for Transfer Schools Program will provide services to 200-250 students, ages 16-21 who are over-aged for grade, under-credited, and have spent at least one year in another high school to earn a high school diploma and gain valuable vocational and life skills supports. Using the Primary Person Model, each student will have a Career Advocate who will: guide students towards removing barriers toward graduation, engage students in college preparatory activities, provide supportive services, and increase self-direction and self-sufficiency through meaningful career exploration experiences, including subsidized internship placements for 75 students. Position: College and Career Counselor Reports To: Supervisor II Location: 1150 East New York Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11212 What The College and Career Counselor Does: Maintain professional relationships with students and student confidentiality Conduct initial intake and assessment of students and/or students' families' situations and needs, including academic and skill levels (basic skills and occupational skills), prior work experience, employability, interests, aptitudes, support services needs, and individual development needs. Create and maintain student files. Collect and submit all documentation regarding student outcomes. Assist students in attaining their goals by identifying and locating community resources for students and by making referrals to appropriate services both within and outside CAMBA. Develop relationship with colleges, trade schools, and career opportunity programs. Provide access to job training/higher educational services. Assist students in completing all college intake applications and forms, including financial aid forms and including parents in the process. Organize and facilitate college and career fairs. Follow-up with students and with referral organizations regarding student contact and progress with referral organization. Counsel students regularly either through meetings in CAMBA offices, by telephone, and/or by visits to the workplace, regarding issues such as education/employment status. Work with students to break through barriers to student goals and to assist students in advocating for themselves and in moving toward self-sufficiency. Recommend and implement strategies to persuade students to participate more fully in this process. Provide follow-up with graduating students through face-to-face meetings and/or telephone contact for one year. Reach out and market the program to the community in order to recruit students. Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports. Facilitate various training workshops (e.g. higher education, career exploration). May act as student liaison/student advocate with outside organizations regarding such matters as education, healthcare, housing, legal issues, etc. May reach out and market the program to the community in order to recruit students. May prepare marketing materials for the program. May prescreen students over the telephone for eligibility and may schedule intake appointments. May assist students in completing all CAMBA intake application and forms. May review all documentation establishing customers' eligibility for program and make file copies. May assist students in completing applications for benefits and entitlements, and may process applications on students’ behalf. Will facilitate at least one workshop per month focusing on post secondary exploration/education targeting student body Minimum Education/Experience Required: Bachelor's degree (e. g., B.A., B.S.W.) in social work or a related field and/or equivalent experience Other Requirements: Dept. of Health, Dept. of Education fingerprint clearance; doctor's note certifying good health; proof of negative results from TB test; and State Central Registry (SCR) clearance. Ability to maintain State Central Registry (SCR) clearance and fingerprint clearance throughout the duration of employment. Ability to adapt to the culture and environment of a public school Compensation : $42,000 annually When salary ranges are listed, the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate. This includes but is not limited to experience, education, budget and/or program size, internal equity, skills and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.
