CLASS INSTRUCTOR Part-time position 2 to 10 hours per weekThe Richmond SPCA is one of our region's most beloved non-profit organizations. As a national no-kill leader in animal welfare, the Richmond SPCA is building a more compassionate community through the delivery of crucial programs of pet adoption, retention, training, advocacy, humane education, and more. Annually, we rescue, rehabilitate and adopt out nearly 4,000 homeless animals while also providing our community with vital safety net programs designed to keep pets in loving homes and out of shelters.Class instructors lead group training classes, behavior workshops and teach private lessons. Classes are a seven-week commitment and instructors determine their class schedule as space availability permits. The organization is currently seeking class instructors for basic manners, various sports, and Saturday classes. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Lead group training classes Teaching private lessons and leading behavior workshops (if desired by instructor) Provide superior customer service Respond to communication from students and managers in a timely manner Build and maintain relationships with clients (both humans and pets) Completing daily housekeeping tasks on days when teaching (restocking supplies, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces) Notify appropriate personnel when supplies are running low Attend and participate in all required trainings and meetings REQUIREMENTS: Must be 18 years of age or older Must have evening and/or weekend availability Must have reliable transportation including during inclement weather QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPECTATIONS: Two years of previous professional experience training dogs and one year teaching group classes use reward-based training methods is preferred; less experience may be considered for applicants with basic skills and a willingness to learn Basic knowledge of learning theory, clicker training, and manners Must embrace reward-based (positive reinforcement) training methods Excellent attention to detail Previous customer service experience and ability to satisfactorily resolve customer service issues Ability to interact professionally and efficiently with others, both verbally and through written correspondence Ability to multi-task, take and follow directions, adapt to and accommodate changing demands Punctual with a sense of urgency Strong work ethic Resourceful and positive attitude Good time management and prioritization skills Must be able to work independently Knowledge of dog sports with successful competition experience is a plus Must have the ability to manage common behavior problems that are often displayed by clients' dogs, including but not limited to reactivity, stranger issues, vocalizing and resource guarding Preference will be given to trainers with certifications through the CCPDT, IAABC, PPG, or CGC evaluators and those with experience in behavior modification PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS: Able to routinely lift 40-50 lbs. Able to bend and use your arms in a repetitive manner Able to kneel, stoop, and use stairs Able to be on your feet for entirety of class instruction as needed WORK ENVIRONMENT: Rapid pace with exposure to potential hazards including animal waste and disinfectants Potential for animal bites and scratches and diseases that are zoonotic (can be transmitted from animals to people) All employees are eligible to become clients of the low-cost, full-service Susan M.
