Art Teacher Cathedral High School 116 East 97th Street New York, NY 10029 Mission: Since its founding in 1905, the mission of Cathedral High School (CHS) has been to provide young women with a transformative Catholic education that challenges them to fulfill their academic potential, inspires them to serve and care for their communities, and imbues them with a deep awareness of their own human dignity. Background: CHS is an all-girls Catholic college preparatory high school in Manhattan serving nearly 400 young women, most of whom represent economically disadvantaged populations. Our students come from all five New York City boroughs, as well as Long Island and Westchester, and represent 59 nationalities. The student body is also racially diverse: 54% Hispanic, 27% Black, 11% multiracial, 5% white, and 3% Asian. 75% of our students are first or second-generation Americans. 37% of our students will be the first in their families to graduate from college, and 14% of our students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. 74% of Cathedral students are eligible for free New York City lunch, 47% are from single-parent households, and 34% receive public assistance. All student tuition is partly subsidized. About the Position: Cathedral High School seeks a dedicated and accomplished art teacher who will encourage our students to develop their aesthetic understanding and appreciation of art history while simultaneously developing their artistic skills and talents. As Catholic educators, we believe our students bear God's image and mirror aspects of His creativity. In filling this art opening, we are looking for an instructor who inspires our students to new depths in the visual arts. Responsibilities General Teaching Responsibilities Plan, develop, and implement art and art history curriculum to meet learning goals Purchase art materials and maintain the inventory of art materials Prepare and arrange art materials and art equipment in the classroom for students to use Deliver lectures to students art, art techniques, art history, and aesthetics Give drawing and painting demonstrations to students to teach them art techniques Instruct students in working in different drawing, painting, and coloring techniques Discuss various artistic approaches and traditions and encourage students to express themselves artistically Provide instruction in the use of pencils, pens, charcoal, brushes, watercolors, acrylic colors, oil colors and other art materials Assign art projects to students, grade the finished art projects, conduct art exams and maintain records of the students' progress Organize art exhibitions to display the artworks of students and help them develop their art portfolios Support the school administration in developing art programs, attend faculty meetings, an participate in parent-teacher discussions Create daily lesson plans and learning activities based on New York State standards. Deliver high quality and engaging instruction Differentiate lessons when needed Evaluate student performance on tasks and adjust the lessons when necessary Maintain a safe, orderly and supportive classroom by following the procedures and policies set forth by the school's handbook Develop engaging and relevant lessons that allow the students to grow academically Formation of the Student Body: Teach and encourage growth in virtue in students Model the joy of living out the Good News of the Gospel and the teachings of the Church Utilize professional and spiritual maturity to create a/an: Welcoming and orderly classroom environment where clear behavioral expectations are instilled, thus affording the opportunity for students to feel safe and comfortable Joyful, peaceful, and faith-filled atmosphere where all can learn and grow Space where stewardship of instructional and other materials are handled with care Cohesive classroom unit where students are nurtured, disciplined, and cared for as children of God, recognizing the value and dignity of each individual Professional Expectations : Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills Excellent organizational capabilities Ongoing pursuit of personal learning opportunities in related fields, sharing with and being a resource for colleagues when applicable Regular communication with parents and guardians Thorough preparations for parent/teacher conferences Required Education, Experience, and Skills: Personal commitment to the mission of Cathedral High School and a love and enthusiasm for Catholic teachings, education, and culture Desire to serve as a positive academic and spiritual role model to all Cathedral students Bachelor's degree in art education or related field The salary range is $45,000-$60,000, commensurate with experience and consistent with union guidelines.
